Pilate On The Beach is a memory play which moves back and forth between the present and the past retelling the events that led to the death of Jesus. The piece is written in a powerful poetic style that captures the emotional depth of the story. We feel the passion and the intensity of this man's guilt and turmoil as he struggles, like many of us, with who Jesus was and is. Pilate On The Beach is a wonderful event for a Good Friday service.
Following the death of Jesus Christ, Pontius Pilate is banished to the island of Lypos where he listens to the sound of the ocean and the sea gulls as the days pass him by. Here he plays over and over in his mind the events that lead to the death of Jesus Christ and his potential guilt in those events. Caiaphas, Gaius Caesar and Pilate's wife are voices that cannot be silenced. Haunted by these conflicting voices of his past, Pilate cannot find peace. In addition, the presence of Jesus never leaves him. For most of the piece, the presence of Jesus increases Pilate's inner turmoil. Lydia, a young child also on the island befriends Pilate and innocently investigates his presence on the island. In the end it is Lydia's mother who helps Pilate understand Jesus. Finally in the last moments of the piece, Jesus comes to Pilate and Pilate simply asks Him: What do you want of me?
