Misconceptions abound in discussions of poverty. For example, many think that world hunger is caused by uncontrollable factors like natural disasters. These misconceptions lead people to feel guilty and overwhelmed when poverty is discussed. They think that an individual can't make a difference. The first step to overcoming that perception is to ask: "Is it more spiritual to help the poor or to be poor?" The second step is to consider: "Would the liquidation of all my assets lift anyone out of poverty?" The answers to questions like these reveal that the poverty situation is more complicated than handouts alone can solve. Although this complexity can make the issue overwhelming, it demonstrates the variety of skills and assets needed to solve the problem. Because there is much to be done, there is a place where you can make a difference. You can't do it all, but what one thing can you do?
