Pilate On The Beach is a memory play which moves back and forth between the present and the past retelling the events that led to the death of Jesus. The piece is written in a powerful poetic style that captures the emotional depth of the story. We feel the passion and the intensity of this man's guilt and turmoil as he struggles, like many of us, with who Jesus was and is.
Pilate On The Beach is a wonderful event for a Good Friday service.
Following the death of Jesus Christ, Pontius Pilate is banished to the island of Lypos where he listens to the sound of the ocean and the sea gulls as the days pass him by. Here he plays over and over in his mind the events that lead to the death of Jesus Christ and his potential guilt in those events. Caiaphas, Gaius Caesar and Pilate's wife are voices that cannot be silenced. Haunted by these conflicting voices of his past, Pilate cannot find peace. In addition, the presence of Jesus never leaves him. For most of the piece, the presence of Jesus increases Pilate's inner turmoil. Lydia, a young child also on the island befriends Pilate and innocently investigates his presence on the island. In the end it is Lydia's mother who helps Pilate understand Jesus. Finally in the last moments of the piece, Jesus comes to Pilate and Pilate simply asks Him: What do you want of me?

Rod Armentrout is captivating in this role I thought the very beginning of this play was a little odd when I first saw it (live). By the end however, God had reached into the depths of my soul and I could not stop thinking about the play for weeks. I could not sleep (literally) until I had written a song about Pilate's role and potential conversion. Rod Armentrout is of the same caliber as any famous actor from Hollywood (or better), and because of his believable portrayal of a very human Pilate, I was able to imagine what it might have been like for him to make the decision to send Jesus to the cross. I highly recommend this and any other play Rod is in. Whether in a humorous or dramatic role, he wraps your heart around his finger! Keep using that gift for the Lord, Rod! (The other actors in this were great as well.)
